FAQS
Glass Care
How should I hang my stained glass?
Each piece comes ready to hang. Either with a chain or some kind of line. To hang your glass in a window, I suggest a sturdy hook into the window frame. Larger pieces will come with a chain in each corner. In a window hang your piece by each chain, going directly up from the top corners, to their own individual hooks. Chain length can be adjusted by opening any of the links with a pair of pliers.
I DO NOT suggest using the hooked suction cups. They can loosen over time and your piece could fall.
To hang from a wall, a nail into the stud should do the trick.
For mirrors, be careful not to scratch the back with the nail!
Do I need to clean my stained glass?
All of your stained glass comes cleaned and polished. However, you may need to clean your stained glass over time. Do so with AMMONIA FREE cleaning products. Harsh chemicals can damage the solder or stained glass. Oftentimes a dry or damp microfiber cloth will suffice.
If your glass ever needs to be re polished you can use any carnauba based wax or pick up some stained glass polish and follow the instructions on the container.
Is there lead in my stained glass?
Yes. Stained glass is traditionally made using lead came or channel. I mostly work with the copper foil method and use a 60/40 solder consisting of tin (60) and lead (40). I do sometimes use lead came as borders on larger sun catchers. Therefore, each piece contains some lead and it is good practice to wear gloves and/or wash your hand after handling your stained glass
Commissions
Do you take on commissions?
Yes! Most of the work I do is commission based. I love it! What that means is you bring me your idea and we work together to create something unique and special just for you.
If you are interested in a commissioned piece of stained glass, please reach out via my contact form, email, or Instagram messages. Send along as much detail as you’d like and I will get back to you to discuss.
What does the design process look like?
Once I have all of the information I need from you to start the designing process I will begin drawing. This is a mutual process, and can involve a lot of back and forth. Making something as close to your vision as possible with integrity to my style and craft is important to me.
How does payment work?
I ask for a $100 deposit once we agree to work together. For small pieces I may just ask for a 50% deposit up front. After the design is approved by all parties I will need a 50% materials deposit. At this point, no changes are to be made to the design without a fee. Now it's time to start!! Once your piece is finished, the remainder of your bill, minus previous deposits, will be due.
*deposits are non refundable. if you decide to discontinue the project before it is complete, you will forfeit your deposits.
How do you price your work?
There are many factors that go into pricing stained glass. Size, types of glass, complexity of design, etc are all factors. For this reason I will usually say that they can range anywhere from $150-$500 a square foot. Once I finish the design I will be able to get you a more accurate cost while working within any price boundaries that may be present.
Are you able to work with budgets?
I do my best to accommodate budgets as much as possible. Feel free to reach out via my contact form to discuss.
How long will it take you to finish my piece?
Depending on my workload I will often give a spatial window to work within so no one is rushed in the process. That being said, when I get going on projects I have historically become obsessed in the process and finish them much quicker than anticipated.
If you have a deadline you would like your piece by, please let me know when inquiring.
How do I get my stained glass when it's finished?
You are welcome to pick them up at my studio if you're local or willing to drive. Otherwise I am happy to ship them anywhere in the country at your expense. I have shipped pieces everywhere. If you would like work shipped out of the US please reach out and we can try and figure something out.
Local delivery is available for an additional fee as well.
Do you do installations?
I do install my work, for an extra fee. If you are inquiring about a piece of stained glass that you want installed into an opening in your home, please let me know at the beginning of the process to discuss options. You are also welcome to have a professional install your window. If anyone other than myself installs them and damage occurs I am not responsible for said damage.
Other Questions
What type of stained glass do you make?
I work with the copper foil “tiffany” method of stained glass. I have made pieces using the traditional lead came method before but have grown quite fond of the copper foil.
Is shipping insured?
I send all glass with basic insurance offered by the carrier. If you would like additional insurance please ask ahead of time and we can add that on at your expense.
What if my glass comes and it is damaged?
I pack all of my glass with the utmost care (and cushion). From bubble wrap and foam padding to custom built wooden boxes with inches of padding. That being said, once they are dropped off at the carrier they are out of my hands and accidents happen. If there is damage to a piece that you receive, let me know within 24 hours.
Please save all packaging materials as we will need to have pictures of the packaging as well as the damaged glass for the shipping company.
I will do my best to help sort out a repair and or a refund distributed via the shipping company.
Sun Machine Stained Glass not responsible for any damages to your glass after it has been delivered.
